Tips: Let me start out by saying we went on this trip at the very end of the summer season. It was the last week Cedar Point was open during the week and while that meant very low crowds at the park, we did not see the best of Sandusky. After this first trip and just absolutely falling in love with the park, we were just a little worried about coming back in the future because of the town. We have since been back several times, (every year in fact, since the first trip) and we now have found restaurants we like and a really cute part of Sandusky. But those are for a different review, not this one. Hotel
Comfort Inn Main Gate: 3 out of 10 Stars We decided to stay at a cheaper place in Sandusky and stay and a nicer place in Cleveland, so, we choice the comfort of the Comfort Inn. Now I had not been at one for a very long time, but on family vacations we use to stay at them and I always remember them being clean. That is the most important thing to me, clean. That and a bed that is not as hard as a rock. Well, the hotel was getting ready to start its fall schedule when we got there and they must have been exhausted from the long hot summer. We were one of the few patrons staying at the hotel; it was a bit of a ghost town. We got checked into our room without incident. We get to our room which the décor was very dated, (think 1970’s glam) but it was fairly clean. The main problem with the room- no toiletries. We went back up to the front desk to retrieve some, (kind of like asking for the big wooden paddle with the bathroom key) and the lady at the front desk informs us they are out of them for the season. So, since we actually were going to need soap and shampoo to clean ourselves, off to Meijer’s we went (after we went to Cedar Point of course). Since we decided to go cheap in Sandusky and stay at a nicer hotel in Cleveland we got what we paid for, which was less than $50 a night. Also, this hotel is called “main gate”, however, it is actually over a mile away from the park. I assumed from the name that it would actually be next to the park. There are park owned hotels that are much nicer and not much more money, and much closer to Cedar Point, and you even get into the park early when you stay at a park property.
Casual Dining
Chi Chi’s: 2 out of 10 Stars As we were driving through Sandusky we couldn’t help but notice it was like the town that time forgot. This town still had a Shoney’s and a Chi Chi’s. I guess we were not in an adventurous mood that evening, or just pooped out from all that walking at the park and not wanting to drive very far, I’m not sure which. But, somehow we ended up at Chi Chi’s. If the truth be known I think it was because Jason wanted fried ice cream. Anyway, not a good experience, and I think it has since closed. If not, and you are in the mood for some completely mediocre Mexican food, then this is the place for you.
Friendly’s: 1 out of 10 Stars This was one of our worst and longest dining experiences ever, and because of the very worst service we have ever had at a restaurant, we will never be going back to Friendly’s. Friendly’s is an ice cream shoppe with a full menu including soups, sandwiches, burgers, and some entrées. When we went there, I think they were a little short on help (which made the wait staff a little cranky, not at all “friendly”). I think we were at the restaurant for about an hour and half, and we didn’t get any dessert. We were afraid how long that might take. The restaurant was not packed, but it was fairly busy and everyone else there was in the same boat; waiting forever, for everything. Jason had chicken fingers and disliked them so much he did not come close to finishing them. I had a pot pie, and it was okay, a frozen one cooking in the sun might have been faster though.
