I would think they would use the site at the Nile for the haunt. The larger area by Boomerang seems to hint more at a ride, and they could also utilize the Nile and its queue for the haunt. But it is early to clear land for a ride that's not due for another year. But what do I know...

But if it is a Doll Haunt, how could they utilize a rapids ride into the layout? Who knows, with my haunt mind I could probably think up something. . .

What makes that a hint at a new ride? The Boomerang plots size makes it more like a Haunt building/Storage.

I too think that the new Haunt will be located on Nile Island, it just makes sense to be able to use the queue line that is already there at night for the HAUNT.  The area over by Boomerang has to be for the new ride next year.  Perhaps it was a case of, we have the equipment here already to take out the extra concrete, why not go ahead and clear and level this area that we will have to later on anyway.

The reason they MIGHT be starting on this so early is because, if this is indeed a GCI woodie, that firm could have up to 4 coasters being built in the states next year.  CGA, WOF and 2 for SF -- it takes some time to build a woodie and perhaps they want to just move across the state when they are done with SFStL's.  I would think that would be the most logical thing for the firm to do, if in fact this is a GCI woodie.

Nice find.  I wish that the permits would list coordinates so we could pin point where it is going in at in the park.  *please be Fury Island* *please be Fury Island*

Orient Section?  Hmmm.... that does make things interesting then.
Especially considering that the flags in Africa belong to 2 different projects.

Im gonna go out on a limb, and go with Tony on this one. The area by Boomerang looks very rectangular (at least the "broken ground" does), and I think that it is too small and crowded for it to be a flatride. Another thing to think about would be that if people brought objects on the ride, and dropped them over the new site, that could be a saftey hazard, so that kinda helps with it being a building of some sort... maybe! I dont know, but whatever it is, its exciting!

Wow, that throws a wrench into things... I'm still thinking the haunt will end up in Fury island too, but that is a complete and totally unfounded guess. I can't picture anywhere in the Orient where a haunt would go...unless something was moved, and I don't see what moving the Bamboozler would accomplish....could they maybe be adding on to/revamping vampire as well?

The Boomerang area does look rectangular, but that could be for a lot of things that a new roller coaster would have (queue house, station, etc.).

Hell, the area is big enough perhaps both the ride and haunt will use that same area. This is intriguing.

The only logical location in the Orient section that they could even build a Haunt building would be over in the Express Lot or on the "landing" there underneath the "kennel" bathrooms outside the front gate.

I still think that the Boomerang excavating has to do with the 2009 project.

Saw this interview with the Cedar Fair boss via TPI.

One of the things I found interesting was repsonse to the below question.

Q: Technology is out there to build coasters over 400 feet. Does it make sense to go bigger?

A: Financially, no. The price of steel today is unbelievable. We're constantly keeping track of steel prices to see what we can put in because we're ordering these coasters three years ahead of time. We're ordering coasters now for 2010. You can go as high as you want, but from a financial point, it's hard to justify.

I took a few things from this.  1st, if we are getting a new coaster it sounds like they made that decision last year and if that's the case corporate has tight lips.  2nd, with him talking about how expensive steel is I am starting to think a woodie is more and more likely for WoF.  Since WoF isn't a high profile park in the chain it seems unlikely they would spend $20 million on a new steal coaster when they could spend less than $10 mil for a GCI (if you use Renegade as a basis for comparison which RCDB says cost $6.5 million).

Obviously the speculation will continue until we start seeing how the concrete supports are going to be set up.  I think it will be easier to figure out once those are setup, if the announcement hasn't been made by then.

Dustijn - I think the difference between this and Lost is at least we can do some actual investigating and find things like permits.  Lost doesn't seem to follow the "everything has a logical explanation" premise that the producers said it had during early season 1.

Well a new permit was entered into the system today. But this one doesn't make any sense to me. . .

Project #181002 might be something to keep an eye on.

Is that for an 8" water line?
Maybe they need to have additional water lines to be able to have more fire hydrants back that way.  :dunno:

That would be my guess too.  Can never have enough hydrants in an area, just in case.

I know everyone hopes that the clearing of land is a new ride but if we look at past additions... Old Plunge cue= Haunt! Old Orient Cue=Haunt! Old Forum Gate= Haunt! Boomerang/ Zinger cue= will be the next Haunt attraction! look at the layout! lets just hope that 08 will be a great year so we can look forward to 09!

If I'd had to wager a guess at what the current land clearing is, I'd say a Haunt.

However, that doesn't mean we have to be disapointed, it could be awesome. And plus, that doesn't meant there WON'T be anything good for '09. I mean, its been two years since Patriot, and hasn't WOF been making pretty good money, especially from Halloween Haunt? We're overdue, and I think they played it smart, spending less money and improving the park rather than use more and we go in for about three years of moderatly good flatrides.

I'd still like a new Oceans of Fun attraction though, its WAY too long overdue. What was the last one? Paradise Falls? Maybe in '09, we'll get a Tornado or better yet one of the waterslide coasters like at Schlitterbahn, hmm?

Um. . . excuse me, OVERDUE?! You guys got a great B&M (okay I know some of you don't think it's that great but I mean come on. . . every B&M is awesome) and you guys have a top notch haunt. . . I know that every park/fan likes a new coaster, but seriously, I don't sit here and beg for a new coaster next year for Valleyfair considering we just got Rennnie last year. . . I mean, I honestly do think WOF is getting something next year, but you can't play the overdue card when it's been 2 years since the last coaster has been added. 2010 isn't outta the picture though if you think about it. Here's Valleyfair's coaster timeline:

1999: Mad Mouse
2003: Steel Venom
2007: Renegade

That's every 4 years. Patriot was built in 2006, so it wouldn't be that bad if you guys had to wait another year. I know this sounds bad (haha), but I really do wish the best for the park. Not pointing fingers at anyone, I just hate CP(esque) fans that beg for a coaster every year.

Obviously our attendance does not warrant a new coaster every year like Knotts and CP.  However, I believe it was pointed out earlier in this thread that if we don't get a major attraction next year (coaster or otherwise), it would be the longest spell of no new ride, or major attraction area such as Camp Snoopy.  During the park's history a new ride, coaster, or attraction has been added at least every two years.  This has been the trend since 1992.  Prior to that there were several years where a new attraction was added every year.  So if you don't include haunts as a new major attraction (which I don't because they are only open 6 weeks out of the year), we are already in a dry spell for a new attraction. Which, I am okay with because the improvements that have been made over the course of last season and this season have been nice.

I don't think it's necessarily a case of most of us feel we are overdue for a coaster, as much as we assume that the new attraction will be a coaster.  If the new attraction (the area that's been surveyed but no work has taken place) isn't a coaster will I be disappointed?  Of course I will.  I don't post here because my favorite ride is Cyclone Sam's.  However, if it isn't a coaster that doesn't mean I won't still be excited.  I grew up going to this park and any new attraction is always exciting.  Not to mention it helps keep the Annual Pass holders happy.

Anything is great, but the ACErs here could help me, but isn't Coaster Con coming to this area next year? So if the park could add a woodie for the same price as a large flat or some other ride, why wouldn't they? Obviously they can't cater to enthusiasts, but a new roller coaster is the best way to increase attendance and awareness of the park.

Well, I don't necessarily think it will be a COASTER, and by no means will I be dissapointed. And sheesh, don't get so flippant over use of the word "overdue", I didn't say we were the only park who earned one. Nor did I imply we were the worst off. I just thought it was unusual for us to get no new ride really for more than one year in a row "for instance, we got Spinning Dragons, Patriot, and The Village three years in a row, and before Spinning Dragons we got Thunderhawk, before that Camp Snoopy, then Boomerange, and then Mamba.

You see, Worlds of fun is pretty consistent with adding new attractions every year, and so this is unusual, that's all. I DO NOT THINK nor claim that we are any worse off. No need to panic.

I'm not a member of ACE, but you are correct Coaster Con will be here next year.  And as you pointed out catering to enthusiasts is not as high on the list as catering to the general public.  In the most recent interview with the Cedar Fair head he basically said that he saw CP as being the park for enthusiasts.  That doesn't mean a new coaster won't draw enthusiasts.  It will.  But that also doesn't automatically mean we will get one either.  I don't know enough about costs of flat rides, but I would guess there are plenty that cost less than $7 Million which is what Evel Knieval cost.  Sure, a new coaster will will draw in the general public, but any new ride will.  Whatever ride or attraction we get will be a business decision plain and simple.

I guess I just don't understand why we are discussing whether or not WoF is or isn't entitled to a new coaster is all.  The decision as already been made on what we are getting.  I guess we should be all thankful that we are getting anything and the park is still open since CF decided to close GL last year and it looks like Star Trek in Vegas might be closing this year (and I want to point out that I have no idea what the revenue is for either so I apologize if its not a valid comparison).

You'll have a hard time playing the sympathy card here on a forum that is based out of KC and sees its largest population of followers being from the "WOF-homepark" area.

Yeah we have a coaster history too -- wooie!
1989:TimberWolf
1993:Wacky Worm
1998:MAMBA
2000:Boomerang
2004:Spinning Dragons
2006:PATRIOT
2009:TBA

Not as if you didn't receive rides in between your coasters just like we did... only you didn't have such a dry spell like we did.  I believe you received a Huss TopSpin and a S&S Giant Swing in between your Steel Venom and Renegade... so your sobs aren't going to be heard too much over the screams coming from those rides.
