SDC 2009
« on: Apr 21, 2008, 06:21 »
I figure we have a new discussion about what's going on at Worlds of Fun next year, it's about time to add one about SDC.

I went there Saturday, and saw that there were some trees marked over by the Grand Exposition.

This first one is right as you enter, next to the wave swinger and huge sign with a drawn 'map' of the area.

The second one was taken from the queue of Electro Spin, of the area kinda behind the Lady Bugs and other kiddy rides next to it. They are kinda hard to see, but are pink and can be seen when you zoom in pretty much right in the middle of the pic.

Finally, I attached a Google Maps image of my guesstimations of where the markings are.

At first, I would have dismissed the markings behind the two kiddie rides, they are really close to the road and they are doing all that construction. But that one close to the sidewalk peaked my curiosity. That area of the sidewalk is strangely void of any obstructions (there's a gap in the fence between the sign on the left and the games on the right). An entrance to a new area perhaps? Like I said, the area is awfully close to the road and Echo Hollow, but people just don't mark trees for no good reason...

Well that's certainly interesting.

2009 is going to take 2008 out back and beat it's ass.

Meh, I tend to be skeptical of ribbons on trees. Most of the time it just means they're doing general forest maintainence. Now the sticks - there's where the action is. Everyone loves sticks.

Really though, wherever the 2009 project turns up - it'll be absolutely amazing. I'm pretty sure this will be THE project of the decade, at least for me.

I'm pretty sure, no... almost positive that you are on the wrong side of the park for Project 2009 -- but what do I know. lol

Yeah, this was the last place I pegged an addition to go. I still have a feeling this will not end up being the site of a new attraction, it could be maybe some type of employee parking or something.

But, it's still fun to speculate. That's why I played around a bit and came up with this pic. I put OW over the site where it looks like the flags could be marking just out of curiosity. Obviously a sweet ride would fit, but it would come awfully close to Echo Hollow, and especially the street if it makes a jaunt behind those kiddie rides, so I don't see that happening. It's still fun to think about though...

I do agree with all of you guys though, I love the way 2009 is shaping up.

FWIW, Echo Hollow is not used until after the park closes for the day, so any excess sound emitted from a nearby coaster (yeah hi, ThuNderaTion) won't matter that much.

^Is that always true though? What about big events and festivals? It just seems like it would cost the park too much in the way of what it would do to their largest venue, which can prove to be an extremely valuable asset. I mean, I can really see them expanding Echo Hollow in the near future.

I'm putting my bets on them putting in some sort of new area off from the Giant Swing, but that's a rough bet.

They do not use it during Christmas and then they only use it for their 6pm show after the park closes.  I guess they do use it for Young Christian's Weekend

You know, much like I do not like Voyage (and you do) there are a lot of people out there that do enjoy Mystery Mine.  It has proven to be a major hit for Dollywood.

Personally, I would like to avoid a Mystery Mine too, and I've never ridden one. I can see the appeal it has though, it combines the best of a dark ride and a roller coaster, plus it's pretty unique. So it would be nice for the park I guess, but I'd rather have something else.

CE are the ones who fill out those polls. I am sure it is a big hit with the GP and that is where a park makes their money. I have not ridden it but it looks fun to me.

I'm sure that a lot of people like MM.

When I return to Dolllywood I will not be riding it though.  The ending was fun but everything leading up to it was not IMO.

I wouldn't mind a Mystery Mine if the tight (and painful) turns after the first lift hill were replaced with more indoor theming to help tell the story.

I wouldn't mind a mystery mine at all, though if I had the ability to choose I would go with a larger wooden coaster more similar to Boulderdash than Thunderhead. Any slightly painful moments on MM are surely made up with all that excellent theming and the wicked elements.

Personally I would like them to steer away from a wooden coaster as they are harder to HIDE from the midway and that's sort of a nice tradition that SDC has going and I would like them to keep.

I wouldn't mind them replacing Thunderation with a woodie. When I rode TnT on Wed., I really wasn't impressed with how rickety it's gotten. Really throws you around good.

The great thing about DW getting rides first is that SDC can then see what riders don't like and change it before they put in a similar ride. So I could see them building a better version of Mystery Mine at SDC someday.

Why is it any harder to hide a woodie than a steel coaster? Just put it back from the main midway and down in the ravines/valleys, and it won't be noticeable.

As a kid I loved Wood Coasters. As an adult I still like them when they are brand new but not when they start getting old.

Since this is making its rounds on the internet, I'm sure it will show up on Screamscape soon... so here you go.
Not going to say when it will be added, but just the fact that it WILL be added to the park soon.

In other news, a wall has appeared in the park in Tom Sawyer Landing.
That is all

That looks like a smaller less rambunctious Geyser Gulch.

As for Tom Sawyer's Landing they actually have it as the new ride spot on their map.

I'm stumped.  It's not a very big area but then again they've pulled some rabbits out of their hat in the past. :dunno:

^Remember though that there is a lot of space behind the Carousel Barn and if you go by the photos it looks like some of that building has been loped off and there is a deck there now.

I would also say that the rope climb will be going away very soon, so you have that area as well to work with.  The thing that intrigues me is whether or not the corkscrew pass will go away and what is to become of the carousel and balloon chase.  I really hope those rides reappear elsewhere.  The balloon chase would fit in back at the Grand Expo.  I would hope that if they added a Carousel back to the GE it would be bigger, so perhaps move the carousel to over at Geyser Gulch?

Thats an interesting development. The enthusiass inside of me is sad there is no coaster coming, but this would help ease the lines for the other rides, I can envision this becoming the most popular ride in the park, to both ride and watch.

Part of me thinks that this isn't the only thing happening next year since they are starting on it so early... but perhaps that is just the enthusiass in me talking as well.

I just can't envision them adding two large cap items in one year, doesn't make much business sense to me..I would think they would save the next one for next year to drive attendance.

^Well they didn't add anything this year.  Also who is to say that they won't "ride the wave" the following year?
