Got some construction photos here: http://www.sdcfans.com/gallery.php?id=8

It's just a wall right now, but soon the Balloons will come down and dirt will move. I still have no idea how exactly this will fit into the area, but I'm hoping the ropes stay in some manner. There's plenty of land back in there, so I hope most of the ride goes in there, and they can leave most of the rest of the area in tact and with fix-ups.

Those clues plus the concept art leaves little to the imagination.

I'm sure that it will be a crowd pleaser.

How exciting that there will be something "new" to look at, the next time I am at SDC besides the Kids Fest things.  I'm still shocked at how slow they are on getting the Culinary School done.  It is almost like they are in no big hurry for some reason -- and that is not like SDC at all.

Wow, that Culinary Building looks like a 3 bedroom house in JoCo. Not cool IMO.

So it seems that the current rides will just get moved to GE but is this really it for the park?  I thought that this was supposed to be their largest capital invest ever???  I water ride and moving a couple of flats can't be more than Powder Keg.

I remember hearing that as well.  I believe that it was Coaster Christmas.

Things change sometimes though. :dunno:

With the economy the way it is, the change shouldn't come as a surprise. I know if I was in management at a park, I would have a hard time justifying a $15 million+ new expansion with such uncertainty about gas prices, the travel industry, etc...

I've been thinking that they've merely pushed the big project off a year or more due to bad results of a survey they put out earlier this year. The way I heard it, the Splash Battle concept was kind of thrown in fairly late in the game, almost as if it were a back plan... It makes sense to me.  :dunno:

Well the Splash Battle was going to be coming to SDC anyway, just not next year.  With the overwhelming success that Dollywood's has brought, it is not that big of a surprise -- much like the fact that Dollywood will be receiving a S&S Giant Swing themed to barnstorming in the next couple of years (I was told 2010, we'll see).

The "BIG" project is still there... but like Steve said it might be 2010 instead.

That's a bummer.

What other concepts were included in the survey earlier this year?

I think the Splash Battle was the only concept passed around this year, and it was only a formality. Like I said, they had plans made already, but then had to fall back on something, and this was the obvious option.

^What Steve said, but also look at what was on DW's survey here recently to see a "glimpse" into the future... I'm just sayin'

I found this on Screamscape.

Quote
Future Concepts for Dollywood - (7/4/08) Dollywood has issued a new survey about possible future attraction concepts they are thinking of. The ideas mentioned in this survey include a new festival concept called the International Lantern Festival which would be Dollywood’s take on Chinese New Year Festival of Lanterns. Three new ride ideas were also thrown out there, including Barnstormer (S&S Screamin’ Swing themed in a giant barn with old fashioned barnstormer planes), Calamity Canyon (a Mondial Super Nova with themed disaster effects going off all around you) and Lost Treasure, an Interactive Sally Dark Ride experience through a dark mine ride. They all sound good to me… why not build all three?

There's also this one.

Quote
2010/2011 - Resort Hotel - In Development - (4/23/08) We’ve got another update about that Dollywood resort hotel survey. It seems they are asking questions about three different resort concepts called Chasing Rainbows, International and Southern Style. Unfortunately you need a valid e-mail address to take the actual survey having the link will get you no-where.
(4/22/08) While I don’t have a link, a reader tell us that Dollywood was taking another guest survey not long ago asking opinions about various lodging features and what people look for in choosing a hotel in the Pigeon Forge area. Sounds like they’re doing some research for that official Dollywood Resort project Dolly mentioned was in development.
(4/14/08) During the opening of River Battle, Dolly mentioned to the local news that she wants an on-site resort hotel to be added in the next two or three years. She said that they are working on it now, but not ready to announce anything yet.

I had forgotten about these - a few days ago a park worker sent me a few photos of the old Landing rides being packed away: http://www.sdcfans.com/gallery.php?g=10

The carousel is toast. I'm pretty sure it's set to be replaced by the rumoured carousel of seasons eventually. The Ballons are on the way back, but no place has been decided on for them just yet as of what I last heard. Hopefully someone will send in some shots of the landing progress soon.

Some big updates:
The new ride project is coming along, though you can't tell much yet. The Landing area has been completely cleared of both the rides that were there, and the old play structure is mostly gone. All that remains are a few trees, the water channel, and the old petting zoo barn. The old concept art that was sent out a couple of months ago is apparently faulty, so I've heard from a park worker. It seems everything about this project is still up in the air except the fact that the ride itself will be a Mack Splash Battle. I've got some photos of the clearing here: http://www.sdcfans.com/gallery.php?g=13

The parking lot project is still way, way behind, but now that the weather has cleared progress has picked up somewhat. In addition to the new lot and the new road, additional parking is being added to both lots D and C. I've got some photos of the progress so far here: http://www.sdcfans.com/gallery.php?g=12

Finally, the new Culinary Arts School is nearly finished. The chimney and the shutters are the last things to be put up externally, and the rest will be done well in time for the Sept. 11 opening. By the way, the siding is made of wood, not vinyl - a few of us were worried about that ;). Again, I have a few shots of it here: http://www.sdcfans.com/gallery.php?g=11

Thanks

We always appreciate an SDC update.  You and Dustijn do a great job of covering a park that doesn't get as much attention as it should.

Heavy construction has started, someone posted a few shots on my forums: http://sdcfans.com/forums/index.php?topic=150.msg4257#msg4257

You can't really tell much at this point, but there's definitely some earth being moved around. They're tip-toeing around some existing stuff, so it's hard to determine the footprint yet, but I can't wait to see how this is going to fit in.

They are making quick work of the area.  I just seems really early to get this far into a river battle ride.

More progress on the hole: http://www.sdcfans.com/gallery.php?g=14

It's still just a hole, but there's obviously quite a bit of work going on. It looks like some major pipe work or something to that order will start soon. The announcement will apparently come mid-October.

I'm still dying to know what will become of the old river fort.

It looks like the hole is on hold.

I'm guessing that this means 2011 or later for a possible coaster.

dang!  I was really anxious to see how they transformed the area.  Now it's going to look horrible for an entire year.
