The Coaster that never was???
« on: Mar 6, 2010, 08:47 »
You know I remember hear awhile back during the time the Hunts were selling the parks to Cedar fair that there had been a plan to put in a coaster in the park. But due to the take over this never happened. I know I had heard Jeff and Jennifer mention something about this some time ago, so Just wondering if anybody had a clue as to what it would had been or anything more than just the chance there was going to be a coaster but due to the buy out it never happend. And I really thought I heard that it had been originally planned for Europa part on the park and something that the Taxi would had to had been moved or taken out for this project. If anybody knows that would be very awsome to know more about it. But I am pretty sure I am not in a haze here, Pretty sure I had heard this from  several people in the past before. thanks.

I can't remember for sure but I also remember the Europa rumor and it was supposed to be two lifts and really long with some kind of vampire theme (might be way off on this).  There was also a CCI that was apparently supposed to go back where the Python Plunge one (fuzzy on this memory as well).  If memory serves me right the PP CCI was the more likely of the two.

That'd be interesting if WoF did get the CCI before Cedar Fair took control. I don't think I've rode a CCI but I've heard that some CCI's are great rides. A CCI and Prowler in the same park would be pretty awesome. I just think it'd be very interesting to think of how different the park would be today had that ride been built.

It's probably best that we didn't get it.  Most CCI's haven't aged well IMO.  And it would have taken up space currently occupied by Prowler and I really dig Prowler's location.

O well thank for clearing up that I was not dreaming about this. I now remember the Vampire deal for sure now. My next question, I wonder if there was, or is any leaked layouts, or if an other park got the same coaster that was supposed to be built at WOF or if this was a Custom. I am a history buff when it comes to parks, and this one has always kinda sparked my interest.

That sounds like a sweet name for a dueling woodie, one side could be Van Helsing and the other Dracula. Whatever happen to Hunt Midwest owning WOF anyways? Did Cedar Fair buy the park out or did they sold it to them?

Sure it'd be cool to have a Vampire coaster but I think Jason has a good point with CCI's. They don't age the best, and it would take up Prowlers location. I also agree with Jason that Prowler has a nice location. The secluded layout that's hidden in the woods back away from the park is perfect!

To clear up some confusion: there were two separate CCI projects for Worlds of Fun.

The first was Vampire.  It was commissioned by Hunt and was to replace the Taxis in Europa in the 1996 season.  Cedar Fair cancelled the project after purchasing the park.

The second was a "Raven style" single track coaster commissioned by Cedar Fair to be built on the Plunge lot and open in the 2001 season.  Now I have heard that a great deal of Prowler is based upon the 2001 CCI design with the only major differences being the curved first drop and the location of the loading station.  Take it for what it's worth.

This is all pretty interesting.  I'd still take Prowler over Raven though.

Are there any other rides that we missed out on?

There was a rumor about a mouse coaster coming the year that we got Boomerang but because the Orient Accident they want to make sure that they had a looping coaster so they switched to Boomerang.

I'm not 100% sure on this one either but someone else might know for sure.

I would had voted for the Mouse. :) Being on the opening crew of Boomerang, I had alot of fun, but coaster buffs would get bored with Boomerang type coasters, but the general public eat up. So Probably was the right choice. Still think the color scheme could have been a whole lot different. HAHA

Vampire for the name was just my educated guess it has never been confirmed as the true name.  Hunt/WOF trademarked the name right before they sold the park, and CF let the trademark expire.  It makes sense though.  It was supposed to be one of the world's largest wooden racing coasters, steel structure, wood track going over buildings (think Indiana Beach), supposedly there were models of the ride, etc but if they existed no one will ever know.

My understanding also is that Hunt was NOT looking for a buyer, why would they be designing a big coaster if they were planning on selling?  An opportunity came along and they took it.

In 1999 WOF originally was looking at adding a wild mouse, then they decided to also add boomerang for the thrill factor, then dropped the mouse.

Boomerang was not added to replace Orient Express,  I was there I lived through the turmoil (trust me it was a completely different PR experience, they HATED the enthusiasts back then).  The decision to remove OE was not made until Sept 2002, By then Boomerang was already two years old and I am sure the park had spent a mint keeping the ride operational.

I used to wish that they had built the 2001 project instead of wild mouse and/or boomerang.  That was the "raven-like" coaster.  Or as GM at the time Dan Keller quoted "A coaster offering a different experience" Back when Gravity Group just formed, before they built a single coaster, Jeff and I sat down for an interview with Larry Bill and Michael Graham, and they basically told us point blank that they had designed the coaster under CCI.  We heard later on from a member of the CCI construction crew, that they were SO close to building it that the construction crew was moving from Indiana Beach to Worlds of Fun, but that never happened obviously.  I would never say that Prowler was better, or that the "un-built" coaster was better, we will never know.  I certainly wouldn't play the odds though!

if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

You know I don't really know.  I remember Jeff and I discussing that it would fit where Autobahn is, but that doesn't mean that's what the plan was. Thats why I mentioned there was a disconnect between the park and its fans, the only way we found anything out was searching trademarks and going down to the KC building permit office.  That has THANKFULLY changed.

its really funny that at the time I wanted the mouse more the Boomerang too.  Not to say that I like boomerang, but you know I am SO glad we got Spinning Dragons instead of a Arrow Wild Mouse.  Providing what we want is not really what we will want in the long run.

Don't forget that at one point we were supposed to get a Vekoma Invertigo for 2000 (named Thunderhawk).

^ Well they sure didn't inherit the park as part of an estate. Regardless of who approached who, the outcome remains that Cedar Fair bought out WOF.

I think what your trying to ask is "Did Cedar Fair make an unsolicited offer to purchase Worlds of Fun?" The answer to that question is yes.

I was thinking if CF didn't buy WoF from Lamar Hunt. I wonder if Premier Parks/Six Flags would had gone after it?

Makes me sick to think what they would had done with the place.
