Photo TR: Worlds of Fun
« on: Aug 22, 2009, 05:22 »
Headed out to Worlds of Fun yesterday for the day & had a great time! It was empty & the park was great. The park's atmosphere reminded me a lot of a Busch Gardens park, but the rides were definitely Cedar Fair.
I got in & headed to the right to find Spinning Dragons. Walked on that, rode, had a great ride, headed over to Patriot. No wait for Patriot either! I rode front row which was very fun, but I can confirm now that I think VF should get a floorless & not an invert. Overall, Patriot was nice & flowed well, but was pretty tame compared to most B&M's. After that I headed over to Timberwolf. I saw a sign warning that it shakes & is intense because of it, so I was expecting a horrible coaster, but it didn't suck that bad. It was pretty much along the lines of a High Roller type coaster mixed with a different layout. It was fun though!

After Timberwolf, I headed over to Mamba. Mamba overall was fun & offered a lot more than Wild Thing. It was a lot taller than I expected too. After that I wandered to Boomerang which was well . . . a Boomerang. Nuff' said. After that, I finally found Prowler. I was extremely excited to finally get a chance to ride this beast, but after a ride in the front row, I wasn't impressed. It was a great ride & pretty smooth, but everything was too low to the ground, and it whipped around a tad too fast for a wooden coaster. I gave her another go in the 3rd to back seat, and let's just say it kicks Renegades butt. It was far better in the back part of the train. After that I just road everything else. Cyclone Sam's was the biggest surprise. It's tucked into a small little building & it's basically a themed Wheel of Misfortune. It was amazing! In the end, I'd say WOF wins with Atmosphere, but Valleyfair has a better ride selection overall.

Had a great time overall & now, it's pic time :D

You can see Patriot from the parking lot. Kinda cool little coaster.

Mr. Moth says "Mullet's should be outlawed in the state of Missouri!"

The entrance was pretty odd in comparison to the other CF parks.

I was tempted to lose my hat on the ride & go & get it, but after I saw this sign, I decided not to.

Ooohhh :D Future VF coaster.

Signage. I loved all of the parks logos & signs for their rides. WOF +1.

Timberwolf Signage.

Thunderhawk? Somethin like that. Thunderhawk, lightninghawk, intimidatorhawk, I can't remember.

Coaster, meet Coasters.

Mamba was better than Wild Thing. Sorry guys.

Uh oh . . . It's a . . .  a . . .

Boomerang. WOF -1.

Doll Factory! Cool.

Best part of the ride.

This water smells DISGUSTING.

But I rode it for the sake of the Flume.

Neato.

Garbage can central.

Green doggy says "Take me with!"

Close up..

AMAZING flat. WOF +1

Cool eagle effect.

Close up!

It's so photogenic!

Fountainage.

Yeah not gonna even try to remember the name.

Wanted to ride it, but didn't want to get wet. So I took pics!

Looks cool.

Prowler night rides ftw.

Sea Dragon.

Nice.

Blurrrrrr.

I had a great time!

Hope you enjoyed the PTR.

Peace -

~HHF

I love looking at PTRs of WOF from people who have never been there before.  When WOF is your homepark you tend to take a lot of things for granted -- having now visited all of the CF parks besides CGA, I can safely say we have one of the best parks in the chain as far as atmosphere goes.

Soooo.... Just curious how tall you were expecting Mamba to be? Don't trust park websites much? I agree it is a much better ride then Mild Thing Sr. however they are roughly the same height. Glad you liked our Park don't be such a stranger.

I have no idea actually. It just seemed like it was never going to end! I was looking at Bloodshed from the lift hill expecting my view of it to be whisked away with the first drop, but when I looked up the lift hill we were only half way up. Definitely a wtf moment.

Curious as to how VF has a better ride selection the WOF.

Wild Thing is actually two feet taller than Mamba. But you would never know it based on the ride.

I'm another one who loves seeing first-timers at Worlds of Fun. I think it generally surprises people to find such a nice little park so far away from an ocean. Also really glad you didn't hate Timber Wolf like everyone seems to. I agree with you, it's no worse than High Roller. I can maybe see Patriot being called tamer than other B&Ms, but I honestly think it's a lot more fun than all the other inverts I've ridden. Raptor is second, but it's not in my top ten. It's no Batman, but it has its intense moments.
I disagree about VF's ride selection, though, lol. VF was my home park for a long time and I love it, don't get me wrong, but WoF has better rides, IMO.
Spinning Dragons>Mad Mouse
Patriot>Steel Venom
Timber Wolf>High Roller
Wacky Worm=Mild Thing
Mamba>Wild Thing
Boomerang<Corkscrew
Prowler>Renegade
Everything else in the world>>>>Excalibur
Also, Detonator>Powerless Tower
However, VF does have Xtreme Swing. I wish WoF would get one of those, or at least a frisbee.
And our RipCords are equal.

EDIT: OH! And I love love love the picture of Mamba through the track.

^I'll agree with the Xtreme Swing for sure! It would be flat out awesome if Worlds of Fun would get a Screamin Swing. I rode Skyhawk a few years back and loved it. It's gotta be one of the best flat ride designs out there. Who would have thought a giant swing would be so much fun!

I think that Valleyfair has an overall better ride selection. It's about even with coasters, but once VF gets their B&M whatever it is, I think we'll have a better coaster lineup. Tony - You're pretty much dead on with the coaster analysis.
Mamba is better than Wild Thing, Prowler is better than Renegade, I think despite their layout differences High Roller is better than Timberwolf, and I dunno about Steel Venom/Patriot. Not really a good two coasters to compare.
With how VF has a better ride selection, I think it's just the flats & stuff. We have Looping Starship, Riptide, Xtreme Swing, Power Tower (which I can firmly say I like better than Detonator), and some killer bumper cars. I felt that the kids rides (excluding camp snoopy) at WOF were sort of rundown and had the county fair type of feel to them.

Overall I think Valleyfair has a better ride lineup & flow to the park than WOF, but still WOF is on top coaster & atmosphere wise.

I think the flow of Valleyfair is retarded, I'm sorry but there is no rhyme or reason to the placement of the rides.  You can't tell me that it is logical how they placed Excalibur and Thunder Canyon so removed from the park or the crazy long walk from the main park to Steel Venom.

The entrances to some rides *cough* Corkscrew *cough* are completely hidden -- and it is almost as if the park is ashamed of the names of the ride because they hide the names (other than Steel Venom, Renegade and Xtreme Swing) in the smallest font possible on saftey spiel signs.  Worlds of Fun has a huge marquee for every ride at the park, and there is no question where the entrance to a ride is.

As far as rides other than coasters, the only rides that VF has that WOF does not are a Screamin' Swing, Tilt-a-whirl and Chaos.  The other rides are pretty much 1-to-1 comparison with WOF and WOF even has some that VF does not so I am not sure how the ride selection at VF can be considered better.

I used to like Power Tower... Then I discovered that other drop towers actually have forces.

I don't think Corkscrew's entrance is that hard to find. It's right along the path and very near the station. There isn't a huge sign, though, that's true. That reminds me, though that The Wave is better than Monsoon.

I tend not to care very much about the placement of Excalibur and Thunder Canyon since I have all but vowed never to ride Excalbur again and I don't care about Thunder Canyon. IMO (and I've said this many times before), they should get rid of Excalibur and expand the waterpark that way, then move the entrance to the waterpark to that underground tunnel that takes you to the back area now.
Their log flume was a lot better than Viking Voyager, too.

And like I said, I grew up going to Valleyfair. It's what I always thought of first when I thought of amusement parks. So there's a certain element of nostalgia that plays into my opinion. Still, though, I think Worlds of Fun is a better park. As far as atmosphere, I would place it third among CF parks after Dorney Park and Cedar Point. VF would be fourth.

I would say that High Roller was better than Timber Wolf before they added the trims on the turnaround, but now it's just dead. Timber Wolf has trims as well, but I don't think they affect the ride as much.

The thing I hate about Valleyfair is that it takes like three hours to get from Renegade to Steel Venom, and those are the only things I care about riding after a while.

I'm not sure what they were going for when they installed Excalibur. It's really tall, but has two low helices and that's it. Doesn't make much sense to me. I don't think it was all Arrow's doing, as they can build something more thrilling than that. It's like the project was intended to be bigger, but due to funds, it was cut short.

I prefer the flats at Valleyfair but like everyone else I prefer the coasters at WoF.  I also agree with the layout being weird at Valleyfair.  In the end I consider them to be pretty similar parks.

Xtreme Swing - We ain't got nothin' - Valleyfair
Power Tower - Valleyfair (dropping is better than shooting IMO)
Bumper car - Valleyfair
Swinging Ship - Valleyfair
Ferris Wheel - Valleyfair
Top Spin - Valleyfair
Wobble Wheel type ride - Valleyfair
Flying Trapeze - I'll take it over Flying Dutchman - Valleyfair
Zulu - WoF
Log ride - WoF (not having a log ride is like being smelly)
Train - Wof
Monsson - WoF
Rip Cord - WoF is probably one of the best locations for such a ride

Everything is either a tie or I don't care about it.

Yeah, they do. It's between Chaos and Scrambler across from the bathrooms.

I'm not much for shoot-the-chutes, but I think the bump on Monsoon is less cool than the straight drop on The Wave.

I really wish there were more to Excalibur. High Roller was fun but it is not Timber Wolf. I remember thinking High Roller was a fun Kiddie Ride after getting off of it. Steel Venom fun but way to short, Patriot wins out.(We can compare these rides because they are both inverted) Mild Thing Sr. is a waste of Steel and potential. Corkscrew makes me giggle. HaHa! Wish WOF had an Extreme Swing. Didn't think there was much difference in Log Flumes before you guys tore yours down but remember being really annoyed by how loud it is so VV wins out. Your Hydro Blasters or whatever they are called, the tube slides that are in the rides part of the park are weak sauce.

I really enjoy both parks and can not wait to get back out to VF sometime.

P.S. I agree with the screwed up layout at VF!

I personally found WOF's layout to be odd. It's basically like a cludesac. You have the main circle and a bunch of little brances off of it (Timberwolf, Mamba, Prowler, etc.). I didn't like the fact that Mamba is just randomly at the edge of the park & doesn't have anything near it, a couple of the pathways that would've easily connected two paths were blocked off (from Boomerang to by the entrance to that big theater thing), and also that some parts of the park were simply vacant. Such as between Boomerang & Zulu/Prowler. The food area wasn't open, so unless you're playing games, you're walking through a closed part of the park. Seemed slightly odd to me. Also concerning Valleyfair's layout, I don't think it's too confusing, and if you want to ride Renegade & you're at Steel Venom, that's why we have feet. It's a 5-10 minute walk, and you have to do that at any park you go to. Want to ride Spinning Dragons & you're at Mamba? Get walkin'.

I'm not sayin I didn't enjoy WOF, I had a great time. Overall I think everyone needs to settle down - We all know the whole VF/WOF debate will never end.

It's one of the best debates to have.  They are very similar parks (ride wise, they actually look totally different).

It's not as fun as Zulu though.  I haven't found an Enterprise that I like as much as Zulu.  Most of them are a lot smaller (or maybe just seem smaller).

The atmosphere is great, truly exciting and true to its name "world of fun". I wish to experience the rides soon, thanks for the photos I can use them to encourage siblings to choose the place. I hope there are also little rides suitable for little brother so he won't bug us around. Commercial Playground Equipment
