Schlitterbahn Kansas City Vacation Village
« on: Jun 18, 2006, 09:13 »
Working off of a tip from Chris/Sawblade the wife and I decided to take a camera with us on our trip to the Nebraska Furniture Mart yesterday and see what was going on at the proposed Schlitterbahn site.  Well Chris was right and there is some demolition work going on at the Northeast corner of the site (94th and Parallel).  As we drive around we also took some before shots from around the boundary of the site.

Thanks for the update. I drove right by that site last night and I didn't notice any construction, maybe I should start paying more attention. The whole Village West area is really nice but this area is due for a face lift, I can't wait until its finished.

The Farm Bureau Insurance Office is not included in the project it will be in the middle of it. There's a white square in the location of that building on the site plan map at http://www.schlitterbahn.com/corp/media/vacation-village.asp . I wonder how would I get to that building on that map.

BTW I bet they'll have discount tickets there at that office for Schlitterbahn when it opens, they already have them for WOF/OOF and SDC/CC/WWB

The other Not Included Spots on that map are the 2 Free Mason Meeting Buildings (one on the west side of the site and one on the north side of the site) and a residential area to the east.

Here's another quick update.

The demolition sites are now clear and heavy equipment has shown up along with some Clarkson trailers.  For those of you that don't know Clarkson is freakin' huge and they've been a big player in most of the new development in this area.  I don't know if they're a part of this project but the current placement of equipment would lead me to believe that they are.

It's update time again and this one includes some real activity.  There is a sign at 94th St & State Ave that indicates the city is improving 94th St, which is probably because of Schlitterbahn.  The work was being done by equipment with Clarkson decals and I am 90% sure that they are the same company that is slated to actually build the park.

Here's the photos along with an updated map.  The map shows that the current work is outside of the proposed boundaries but the boundaries may have changed.  Schlitterbahn has removed the map from their site that had the streets and layout of the park in relation to those streets.

It's been almost 2 months and a lot has happened since our last update.  Chris was nice enough to tip me off to the action.

A majority of the old fair grounds have been removed.  It's kind of hard to see from the road but several buildings are gone and it looks like the old stadium is gone as well.  Widening of 94th St is still underway and the road is now closed.  More heavy equipment is on site but it's unclear if it's for the 94th St project or the actual grading of the Schlitterbahn site.

I should start paying more attention to that area, I'm up there all the time. Thanks for the update, it's good to see such progress. Hopefully it will be a mild winter so they don't get behind.

I checked it out and saw what you were talking about but the photos didn't do it justice.  The 94th St project has come a long way though.

There is a really cool diorama at the Legends movie theater.  The park looks huge and is divided into a couple of different sections.

If you get a change you should get out there and check it out.  It's a great place to see a movie as well.

I'll try to remember my camera next time I'm out there.  It really is one of the best places to see a movie in this town.

I merged your thread with the existing Schlitterbahn thread.  It's definately coming and I'll post some photos of the diorama in the next couple of minutes.

I decided that a movie would be a good idea this afternoon and I even remembered the camera.  I'm not sure if this is a final plan or not.  I actually doubt that it is but it's impressive either way.

001 is a look from the Southwest corner of the site.  You can see just how many hotels and shopping areas there are.
005 is looking from East to West and shows room for future expansion.
008 is from the South
009 closes in on some of the water park attractions.  There are a lot of slides.
010 is another section of water park action and includes more slides.
014 is at the East end of the property and I'm not sure what it is another than a cluster of tree houses and even more water attractions.

In each of the photos you should be able to see what will probably be the Transportainment river system.  Click on the photo to expand it to it's full size.

Children of Men.  It's really intense and gets the yeti recommendation.

The park definitely looks gi-normous and even has a ton of room for expansion.

I have a feeling OoF is in a lot of trouble now.  WoF might as well start making plans to combine the two parks now.
